    Hi again,

I’ve got the usual selection of links for you to enjoy today.

But first, here’s why I love sending email newsletters…

Kamil in Poland signed up for my Living Adventurously newsletter ages ago. On September 4, 2019 he emailed me:

    ‘Hi Al,
I find your newsletters very helpful. It has challenged me to decide to walk every street of my city (about 3000 streets). Every day I try to walk minimum one new street. 98,5% still to go. But it has opened my eyes for a place I live. Thank you!
    Kamil’
    Today, I received another email:
    ‘Hi Al!

This is the moment when I can inform you that I have walked all the streets in my city of Cracow. :)

It took 3 years, 10 months and 16 days (over 500 hours of walking) and over 2800 km to walk each of 2961 streets.

I chose Ostatnia street (translated to “Last street”) for my final walk and it was crazy, because people who lives there, come to celebrate that moment.

    Cheers!

    Kamil’

    How cool is that?!

Well done, Kamil! (More info on his challenge here.)

Another thing I love is what a great bunch of readers I have. Even though I haven’t met 99% of you, it feels like a really friendly community.

I sent a message recently saying that due to a few problems with a publisher’s warehouse, I’ve ended up with a massive stock of books that I need to get rid of! Hundreds of you kindly responded to my cost price firesale of stock by ordering some books.

Thank you! I really do appreciate it.

(By the way: if you want three books for £10, you can still get them here if you’re in the UK!)

Anyway, here are some things I’d like to share with you today:

    • My new children’s book, Against the Odds, comes out next week. Why not pre-order a summer treat for the kids in your life…? ?
      UK link
       // Worldwide link.
    • 3,512 days, zero air miles: Meet the Danish man who’s visited every country in the world (without flying).
    • Go deeper, not wider. I really like this idea.
    • I could while away hours on this website, looking at random views from around the world.
    • Discovering the world’s largest pine tree.
    • “Roger Deakin paddles his canoe, Cigarette, through the shallows of the River Waveney to discover the sounds of the river and its wildlife.” A pleasingly gentle radio programme.
    • If you miss the sounds of nature… Here’s a live radio transmission from the Knepp rewilding site. Very peaceful!
    • 25 Adventure Blogs you might enjoy following.
    • I’ve signed up for the new Threads social media platform. @al_humphreys

    Can I help you?

Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate. Here’s what you guys have been up to recently:

Thank you for reading. As Austin Kleon says, “This newsletter is free, but not cheap.” To show your support, would you mind forwarding it to someone who’d like it,  sharing it on Twitter, reading one of my books, subscribing to a free podcast, getting a birthday greeting video from me, or maybe even donating to keep the newsletter going.

(If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here.)

    Cheers,

    Alastair

    ELSEWHERE

‘Elsewhere’ is one of my favourite doses of monthly escapism, with long reads on the art, sport and adventure of outdoor swimming.

    FIVE BOOKS

I always search on the Five Books website when I’m after some new reading material. They’ve put together their Summer Reading lists now.

    ADVENTURE UNCOVERED

How can we how we can use COVID-19 to build a sustainable outdoor community? An unflinching read by Rosie Watson (who is currently running from the UK to Mongolia!)

    ALEX FROM GLASTO

What captivates me about sport, extreme adventures, and musical performances is the need to give your all NOW. This opportunity comes once in a lifetime… If this one doesn’t do it for you, try this kid with Bruce.

    THE COLOUR OF ADVENTURE

When will travel show more diversity? The faces of adventure travel are just as diverse as the spirit of adventure itself, argues Lola Akinmade Åkerström.

    A NOTEBOOK FOR EVERYDAY ADVENTURES

A cheap and cheerful notebook to help you answer the questions raised in The Doorstep Mile and begin living more adventurously today.
For orders outside the UK, please click here or search your regional Amazon store. Thank you.

    PODCAST MICRO-SPONSORSHIP

Series 2 of my Living Adventurously podcast is coming soon! I’m going to experiment with having different sponsors for each episode. If you’re a small brand / charity / newsletter / event that lives adventurously, let’s chat! Just hit reply… ?

(PS – Anna McNuff was my guest this week. ?)

Thank you so much to the 90+ of you who help support these newsletters via Patreon (either monthly or annually) and keep the metaphorical lights on and the newsletters going out to 19,000 readers.

I am experimenting with a weird model, making payment for this newsletter optional. In other words, it will remain free for everyone to read and enjoy as usual.

But if you’d like to pay for it in order to help me continue to write newsletters and books, then you can do so on Patreon here, paying whatever you like for as long or short a time as you like.

Needless to say, I’m extremely grateful to any generous nutters who opt to pay for something that they can receive for free! It’s not a transaction so much as a contribution that helps everyone. It’s the difference between being a patron and a customer. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this idea. We’ll see how it goes. Thank you.

    Other Bits’n’Bobs I Do
    • Would you like to try out my other newsletters: The Working Adventurer or The Doorstep Mile?
    • I have three podcasts you can listen to: Living Adventurously (a series of interviews), There Are Other Rivers (a story about walking across India), and The Doorstep Mile (a friendly kick up the bum).
    • I’ve written 13 books. Hopefully one of them might appeal!
    • This newsletter is ‘free but not cheap’. If you enjoy it, you can buy me a virtual coffee to help keep me writing. Thank you!
    • You can also really help me by forwarding this newsletter to anyone you think might enjoy it. Thank you!
