The most frequent, and most difficult, question asked about expeditions is ‘why’?
Here is George Mallory, who I like to think reached the summit of Everest, describing his motivation,
“For the stone from the top for geologists, the knowledge of the limits of endurance for the doctors but above all for the spirit of adventure to keep alive the soul of man.”
The Encouragement page of this site makes more efforts to answer ‘why‘?

I like the full Ranulph Fiennes quote: “I go on expeditions for the same reason an estate agent sells houses – to pay the bills.”
