    Shouting from the Shed 86

    Good morning / добрий день,

I’m a long time supporter of Hope and Homes for Children, a charity born from the suffering of orphans during war. 30 years on, their work is as vital as ever. As the war in Ukraine intensifies, many people want to do something – anything – to help. Here are four ways that a donation to their work will make a difference to vulnerable children and families. ? ??

Here are a few other things I’d like to share with you today… ?

    • ? Outdoor Gear: If, like me, you have a stack of perfectly good but no longer used outdoor gear, send it to the Continuum project by Alpkit. They will donate it to someone who really needs it.
    • ⏰ Article: How Covid Stole Our Time and How We Can Get It Back. (Even if you don’t read the article, have a look at this uplifting picture about all the choices that still await us.)
    • ? Article: Maps that show life is slowly getting better. New ways of seeing the world can help provide a new perspective to age-old problems.
    • ? Video: Urgent vs Important. “Frustrated at the continual interruptions of modern life, I headed to a bothy in the hills to get some work done on my book. It was the most productive three days I have managed in ages!”
    • ? ?‍♀️Video: Art + Mountain biking.
    • ? Podcast: There are some seriously good interviews in the archives of The Adventure Podcast.
    And some quick snippets… ?

    • ✂️ What effect has recent weather had on wildlife? Does climate change affect timings in nature? Join Nature’s Calendar and help scientists discover answers to these questions simply by paying attention on your walks, rides or commutes.
    • ✂️ If you’re a fan of Wordle and / or a fan of world maps, then you might enjoy Worldle, a daily geography challenge. (Although I failed today!)
    • ✂️ A deadline to register forgotten footpaths by 2026 is set to be scrapped by the government. Thank you for all your help!
    • ✂️ A lovely Twitter thread about exploring maps, being curious, and finding what’s on your doorstep.
❓Can I help you? Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate. Here’s what you guys have been up to recently… ?
    • ❤️ The Eurasian Curlew, with its quiet beauty and haunting call, is hurtling towards extinction as a breeding bird in most parts of Britain. Roger is walking 1000 miles to raise the £75,000 needed to reverse the decline of the curlew.
    • ❤️ Aidan of Days Brewing is making an alcohol free beer brewed up in Scotland and now certified B-Corp.
    • ❤️ Tom has spent six years building the Transcaucasian Trail and is now inviting intrepid hikers to walk 1800km across the Caucasus this summer.
    • ❤️ Marcus is tackling a charity challenge to run from Lands End to John O’Groats while dressed as a toilet, supporting Wateraid. Amusing, but also a great challenge for a crazily neglected cause.
? Thank you for reading. As Austin Kleon says, “This newsletter is free, but not cheap.” To show your support, would you mind forwarding it to someone who’d like it,  sharing it on Twitter, reading one of my books, subscribing to a free podcast, or maybe even donating to keep the newsletter going.

(If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here.)

    Cheers,

    Alastair

Thank you so much to all of you who help support these newsletters via Patreon and keep the metaphorical lights on. These superstars are…

I am experimenting with a weird model, making payment for this newsletter optional. In other words, it will remain free for everyone to read and enjoy as usual.

But if you’d like to pay for it in order to help me continue to write newsletters and books, then you can do so on Patreon here, paying whatever you like for as long or short a time as you like.

Needless to say, I’m extremely grateful to any generous nutters who opt to pay for something that they can receive for free! It’s not a transaction so much as a contribution that helps everyone. It’s the difference between being a patron and a customer. As always, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this idea. We’ll see how it goes. Thank you.
