    Shouting from the Shed 79

    Shouting from the Shed 79

    Hi again,

?First of all, apologies if you received an errant email from me last week. Accidentally clicking ‘send’ to 18,000 people is mortifying.

?I have decided to experiment for a few weeks with increasing the frequency of my newsletters but decreasing the number of links I share each time (although the archive post is still down below if you want extra). Please do let me know your thoughts on this format (and anything else at all) by hitting reply…

Here are five things I’d like to share with you today… ?

    • Fun: Dogs of the World (and their countries of origin).
    • Film: “Sometimes we hear a call from nature. When I was 18 years old I ventured out alone with only a backpack full of simple hand tools to actualise my dream. Build my own traditionaloff grid log cabin by hand from the materials of the Swedish wilderness. Just like our Forefathers did.”
    • Article: Why face real threats when simulated ones will do just fine?
    • Activism: Our last free-flowing rivers and wild places are increasingly under threat. Save Our Rivers aims to provide those who care with the information and knowledge on how to use existing legal structures to fight back.
    • Book: My friend Brendan (aka ‘Semi Rad’) has put together a list of his books of the year.
ALSO: The Rebel Book Club has some fabulous non-fiction book recommendations.
(?? ALSO ALSO: I published my 13th book this year and I would love you to gift someone a copy of it this Christmas. The book is called Ask An Adventurer and is available in the UK, US and worldwide with free postage. Thank you. ??)
❓Can I help you? Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate. Here’s what you guys have been up to recently… ?
    • ❤️ Sabrina has hiked from from the north to the south of Fuerteventura and written a blog.
(If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here.)

    Cheers,

    Alastair

Shouting From The Shed – 29

?I am afraid that time of year has come when I try to subtly flog you a new book I have written.
Hopefully you won’t notice this if I phrase it sort of like, “if you ever wonder what happens when a young adventurer returns from epic years on the road, grows up, gets married, has kids and settles down, but still yearns for the open road, then perhaps you will find ‘My Midsummer Morning’ intriguing reading.”
    Adventure meets Midlife Crisis!
(Those of you who have grown up (and old) alongside me in the many years since I began this newsletter in 2001 might find this book strikes a few chords…)
You can pre-order the book from my website (UK only), on Amazon UK (including Kindle or audiobook), here in the US of A, and here everywhere else in the world (with free postage).
? I have a confession to make. I do another email newsletter as well as this one. I am sorry. It’s not you. It’s me.
I really wanted to find a platform for the writing I do about encouraging us all to live a little more adventurously every day. It has only been running for a few weeks and I would love you to join the journey and subscribe.
But don’t worry! If you’re more interested in silly videos, brilliant books, inspiring videos and me waffling, then hang around here in my shed.’m not shy… I’ll answer some of them in the newsletter.

? Walking, by Erling Kagge is an illuminating examination of the joy of walking. It’s about the love of exploration, the delight of discovery and the equilibrium that can be found walking.
? A short film that makes me want to leave the world behind and go and be a fire lookout on a hilltop in America for the summer.
? A nice idea for a microadventure – the longest distance you can walk in the UK without crossing a road.
? The photographs in “The Pillar” encounter birds on their own terms. Fine short essay and photography piece in the New Yorker.
? Karen Penny is on a continuous walk around 19,000 miles of the British and Irish Coastline, and 20 of the largest islands. (via the Intrepid newsletter filled with amazing women doing epic stuff.)
?How to save our planet. The best 8-minute summary I’ve seen.
? Congratulations to my friend Jamie who just ran 513.97 miles on a treadmill in a week for charity. ?

That’s all for now. Hopefully that wasn’t too much hard sell for my new book?!
    Alastair
