    Shouting from the Shed 133

    Shouting from the Shed 133

    Hi again,

Happy autumn! And a big thank you to everyone who replies to these emails and shares links, thoughts and advice. It’s nice to have some company in my shed.

Thank you also to all of you who help support these newsletters via Patreon (either monthly or annually) and keep the metaphorical lights on and the newsletters going out to 17,000 readers.

If you enjoy this newsletter, please forward it to five friends (or at least give it a quick plug on Twitter in a single click). If you don’t enjoy it, please click ‘reply’ and let me know how it could be better!

Some things I’d like to share with you today:

    • Thank you to everyone who has watched my new online talk. I made a very foolish decision to down two cans of Red Bull just before I began, so I was ridiculously wired and speaking far too quickly and generally forgetting to breathe and trying to say far too many things all at once and trying to fit a year of learning into 15 minutes and it all felt a bit mad while I was up on the stage and trying to remember what I actually meant to say!
    • ⛺️ Why the Legal Argument about Wild Camping on Dartmoor is about Much More Than That. (And a nice film with more context to the wild camping situation.)
    • 💧 The March for Clean Water is a national gathering on November 3 of anyone concerned and outraged about the state of our waterways.
    • ✍️ If you struggle to get words down on paper (🙋‍♂️), you might find it helpful to join a silent Zoom group of hundreds of people writing away for an hour. I’m loving it. 8am, 1pm, 4pm and more (UK time). See you there? A fantastic resource for writers who maybe struggle with procrastination, motivation, and the challenges of progressing with ploughing a lonely flurry.
    • 🎤 I enjoyed chatting about adventures large and small on the Sketchplanations podcast. Their website is also worth checking out: ‘simplifying complex ideas through fun and insightful sketches.’
    • 💻 If your job basically involves driving a computer all day, have you thought about the possibility of working full-time whilst exploring quite a big chunk of the world…?
    • 🏃 A runner looks for new ways to find adventures close to home. Interesting article.
    • 🚴‍♀️ There are no more borders in the European Union. However, you will always know where the Netherlands begins…
    • 🏔 An interesting podcast summary of the inspiring tale of Yvon Chouinard, a reluctant billionaire who only wanted to climb and surf, harnessed his passions to create outdoor apparel brand Patagonia – before giving it all away to fight climate change.
Listening to this raised a question for me which I think all of us should consider and apply to our own careers: ‘What can my work and business do to leave the planet in a better place?’
Hit ‘reply’ and let me know what you might do and what I could do?
One of my films I’d like to share with you today:
The Right to Roam and Wild Camping on Dartmoor

(I’m going to start sharing my most recent films, for those of you who don’t follow YouTube.)
    Can I help you?

Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate.

Here’s what you guys have been up to recently:

    • ❤️ Frank is creating a game about cooking with leftover ingredients (reducing food waste is a huge climate solution). The crowdfunding ends October 23rd.
    • ❤️ Paymon runs Wilderness Hammocking, offering a range of courses from the novice who wants to experience the outdoors and learn new skills, to seasoned explorers who want to push their limits.
    • ❤️ Will has published a book about walking 1,000 miles from the most southerly point to the most northerly point of mainland Britain, wild camping all the way. All proceeds going to the Mind charity.
    • ❤️ George is crowdfunding Coffee with Conservationists, a science and nature podcast bringing you stories from the frontlines of environmental science and justice.
    • ❤️ Against the backdrop of the upcoming Supreme Court case, where the fate of the only legal wild camping area in England is to be decided, John trekked and wild camped across Dartmoor’s captivating wilderness, from north to south. Along the way, they interview those they cross paths with, and capture their perspectives on this historic battle between a wealthy landowner and the public’s freedom.
    • ❤️ Sophie 32, Polly 50, Janine 70 and Miyah, 24 are fundraising to row 3,200 miles unsupported across the Atlantic in 2025.
Thank you for reading. As Austin Kleon says, “This newsletter is free, but not cheap.” To show your support, would you mind forwarding it to someone who’d like it,  sharing it on Twitter, reading one of my books, subscribing to a free podcast, getting a birthday greeting video from me, or maybe even donating to keep the newsletter going – either monthly on Patreon or treating me to a metaphorical cup of coffee.

(If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here.)

    Cheers,

    Alastair
