    Alastair Humphreys
    Shouting from the Shed

    Hi again,

September days. Do you feel happy for a final few days of warm sunshine, or melancholy that summer is done? This is plenty. This is more than enough.

If you enjoy this newsletter, please forward it to five friends. If you don’t enjoy it, please click ‘reply’ and let me know how it could be better!

Also – I got up at 5 am to write this for you. Do I get a medal?

Some things I’d like to share with you today:

    • ⛰ A drone view flying up Mount Everest. This is brilliant to watch.
    • ✈️ What an amazing adventure! Back in the 80s two lads sneaked onto a 747 and flew to New York, for the fun of it!
    • ?‍♀️ Live in Edinburgh and fancy early morning bike rides with company and coffee? Give the Edinburgh Dawn Patrol a try (inspired by the same thing in Oslo).
Now also available in Worthing. I really love his joy when the first new person turned up! (Reminds me of the guy starting a dance party.)
Any other keen cyclists fancy setting one up where you live? Let me know if you do, and I’ll share it here.
    • ? Please follow the latest adventure of two of my Atlantic rowing team mates: Steve and Si have set off to Foil Around Britain.
    • ?‍♀️ This is wonderful: long distance cyclist Ian Hibell discusses his expedition equipment on Blue Peter in 1975.
    • ? Sidetracked has long been the leader in beautiful adventure magazines. They’ve just released a book which is going straight on the Santa wish list, a celebration of the joys of adventure in places of breathtaking and pristine natural beauty.
    • ? There She Goes: A Reading List on Women Adventurers – apologies for omitting the link last time. ?‍♀️
    • ? Translate your running & walking into real-world accomplishments – the best way to Run Every Street. See also: Wandrer – “the game you win by going places you’ve never been before. The main rule is: you get credit for every road you travel, but only once.”
    • ? I am unbelievably jealous of this canoe journey (except for the mosquitoes…) – 4,400Km From Minnesota to Arctic Ocean.
    • ? I’ve started a new newsletter where adventure meets purpose. Fancy giving it a try?
    • ? The total CO2 generated in the UK alone from unneeded stored data is the equivalent of 112,500 return flights from London to Australia.
One of my films I’d like to share with you today:

(I’m going to start sharing my most recent films, for those of you who don’t follow YouTube.)

Our rivers and lakes are disgusting. Let’s get them sorted out!

    Can I help you?

Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate.

Here’s what you guys have been up to recently:

    • ❤️ Kerry-Anne and her 13-year old son have hiked almost 1,200 miles around the whole of Wales, fundraising for the RNLI.
    • ❤️ Andrew is raising money for Tiny Lives by swimming Windermere (10.5 miles), then cycling the Fred Whitton Challenge route (112 miles) then running the Bob Graham Round, 66 miles around the Lake District fells with 27,000 feet of climbing.
    • ❤️ Mark is running the 219km of the Wye Valley Walk – and aiming to beat the current Fastest Known Time. He’s hosting a webinar on Wednesday, September 18 titled Big adventures on average talent: ultramarathons, river rescues and YOU – Some things seem too big. Like running 219km. And rescuing a dying river. And yet some people do them anyway. How? And how can you?

Here are a few things I’d like to share with you today…

    • Instead of buying expendable Christmas presents, why don’t you buy people a membership to one of these charities that I’m a fan of: Stump up for Trees, Woodland Trust, Trees for Cities, Rivers Trust, Wildlife Trust, Ramblers, RSPB, Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, John Muir Trust, Youth Adventure Trust, British Schools Exploring Society, Calvert Trust, ParkRun, Hope and Homes for Children.
    • Splendid isolation: in search of Scotland’s hermits. Really thought-provoking pictures and words.
    • A Mile an Hour: running, getting stuff done, making use of the time and everyday adventure. I love this film. A great idea for the holidays?
    • The Warmest Tent on Earth – Pitching in the Siberian Arctic Winter.
    • On starting long-distance adventures in your fifties.
    • Explore live wildlife cameras around the world.
    • An optimistic glimpse of the future of bikes, kids and cities.
Thank you for reading. As Austin Kleon says, “This newsletter is free, but not cheap.” To show your support, would you mind forwarding it to someone who’d like it,  sharing it on Twitter, reading one of my books, subscribing to a free podcast, getting a birthday greeting video from me, or maybe even donating to keep the newsletter going – either monthly on Patreon or treating me to a metaphorical cup of coffee.

(If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here.)

    Cheers,

    Alastair
