    Shouting from the Shed 122

    Shouting from the Shed 122

    Hi again,

The sun is shining and the weather feels too nice for long introductions…

Here are some things I’d like to share with you today:

    • I’m speaking in Keswick, in the Lake District, on 15 and 17 May.
    • I made a short film about returning to revisit the first grid square I wrote about in Local.
    • How my life (and approach to life) has changed since the day I set out to try to cycle round the world 10,500 days ago.
    • Why you should try your first Microadventure this summer.
    • Extreme beachcombing – a really nice short film. (h/t Jason)
    • The Alps’ glaciers are melting, and these Swiss cartographers have work to do.
    • Two things I love very much: the shipping forecast and cricket! (h/t Lev)
    • Fancy bicycle touring with kids?
    • I really enjoyed interviewing the founder of Park Run
on my podcast– it’s such a brilliant movement and outlook on life… I was reminded of it after writing this little ode to Park Run.
    • For die-hard trail runners living in London, this 153-mile circumnavigation offers an unprecedented hybrid running experience.
    • Join the fight for healthy freshwater in the UK. Over the weekend of 7-10 June, we’re asking people across the UK to go out and measure the water quality of their local rivers.
    Can I help you?

Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate. Here’s what you guys have been up to recently:

    • ❤️ Geoff has written a book about IT support for Special Forces in dangerous locations.
    • ❤️ Penny volunteers for a digital charity Givto.org that raises money for charities, particularly small ones.

50 Newsletters Ago: Shouting from the Shed 72

    • Girls gotta eat dirt. The story of three best friends, roommates, and riding partners with a taste for the finer things. A fun film.
    • A Two-Year Canoe Journey across America.
    • Lots of people are looking forwards to some microadventures this summer. Here is a list of FAQs I’ve put together to try to help.
    • We’re creating a network of walking routes that connect all of Great Britain’s towns and cities. Up for helping?
    • For Decades, Cartographers Have Been Hiding Covert Illustrations Inside Switzerland’s Official Maps.
    And some quick snippets…

    • Surely These Notebooks Will Help Me Create Amazing Things.
    • Click to drop a raindrop anywhere in the contiguous United States and watch where it ends up. (Via Kottke, as so much good stuff is.)
    • A wild baking microadventure.
    • The Relatable Emotions of Depressed People From 3,000 Years Ago.
Can I help you?Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate. Here’s what you guys have been up to recently…
    • Danny has produced a boardgame about creating animals, and providing those animals with traits that will help them survive. Changes in climate, shortages of food, and disastrous natural events all impact the ecosystem in which you play.
    • Tom is illustrating every place he visited during New Zealand lockdown.
Thank you for reading. As Austin Kleon says, “This newsletter is free, but not cheap.” To show your support, would you mind forwarding it to someone who’d like it,  sharing it on Twitter, reading one of my books, subscribing to a free podcast, getting a birthday greeting video from me, or maybe even donating to keep the newsletter going.

(If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here.)

    Cheers,

    Alastair
