    Hi again,

In the last newsletter I started with an impromptu riff about trying to figure out what to get my teeth into now that I’ve finished writing Local. I was touched by how many of you got in touch with ideas. Thank you! I love getting emails in response to these newsletters (just hit ‘reply’).

Your suggestions offered great food for thought – not least of all through discounting ideas that several people recommended but which do not appeal to me for various reasons: leading tour groups or writing a how-to guide for family microadventures being two examples.

I have decided to put together a questionnaire in my search for what project I should focus on next.

    • If you’d like to help me by offering your ideas, you can fill in the form here.

Thank you in advance! I’ll share the conclusions next time.

    Right, onto business…

Here are some things I’d like to share with you today:

    • I’ve got a few small events coming up. Please do come along if you’re in the neighbourhood! Yorkshire, Lake District, North Wales, North East, Edinburgh.
    • “Great God, this is an awful plaice!” I cycled from the North Pole of my local map to the South Pole.
    • What would happen if you got one of those urban rental bikes and then decided to ride across your country? I’ve often daydreamed of doing this in London. But someone has done it from NYC to LA!
    • I told ChatGPT all the books I’ve enjoyed reading over the last four years, and asked it to recommend new books for me to read based on that list. Here they are. Fascinating and really useful.
    • Love Her Wild is a UK-based women’s adventure community providing opportunities, support and funding to make the outdoors more accessible. It’s a fantastic community.
    • Do you ever wonder what music a bird might listen to? ?
    • A podcast and/or long article about how to write travel memoir.
    • Paul Elkins designed a nomadic cycling micro-shelter based on the Airstream design. A tiny home for $150.
    • If you’ve read my new book, Local, I’d be massively grateful if you would leave a quick review here. I’m trying to get up to 100 reviews. It only takes 30 seconds to do. And please be honest in your feedback!! Thank you.
    Can I help you?

Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate. Here’s what you guys have been up to recently:

    • ❤️ Sahir is cycling from Glasgow to Istanbul as part of a two-part reverse migration to her ancestral village in Pakistan. “I can’t imagine a more unreasonable thing for someone like me – an unemployed, recently divorced, third-generation immigrant, mother-of-two in my mid-30s – to do than to cycle solo across a continent.”
    • ❤️ McKenzie has released her film about cycling the world (Use this promo code: McKenziesPromoCode).
    • ❤️ John Freeman and his dog Mira (@mira_la_Perra) have become the first dog-human team to race the 4300km Tour Divide from Banff, Canada to New Mexico, USA. #dogpacking
    • ❤️ Hannah has written about leaving the ‘mum guilt’ and ‘dad guilt’ at home, checking your habits and finding everyone the ride time and headspace they need.

Here are five things I’d like to share with you today…

Sad news that Aleksander Doba, veteran ‘King of the Ocean’ has died (on the top of Kilimanjaro).

️ Lessons of lockdown, learnt on the ice.

Keeping it local: this virtual event looks excellent. “Our contributors have gone off the beaten track in Britain and will share with you their guide on where and when to go, sharing ideas around how we can all travel and live a little more sustainably.”

A fascinating behind-the-scenes glimpse at how Danny MacAskill trains for his tricks.

Thought-provoking piece about how much time you have left in life. Pair it with this site where you can chart your own life progress.

    And some quick snippets…

✂️ Photographer Laura Page set out to capture their stories and challenge what she sees as ageist stereotypes. Wonderful people!

✂️ Britain’s ancient footpaths could soon be lost forever. Campaigners have five years to record a sprawling network of paths – but the pandemic is thwarting their work.

✂️ Learning to packraft whitewater rapids in New Zealand in your 60s.

✂️ 11-year-old Max has camped out every night for a year now and raised £500,000 along the way.

✂️ A gorgeous Instagram account of cycling adventures round the world.

✂️ If you live near the sea, this is a great app. It tells you where a ship is bound for (with a guarantee of wanderlust.)

Can I help you? Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate. Here’s what you guys have been up to recently…
️ Inspired by the words from David Bowie’s ‘Life on Mars?’ James pedalled 2700 miles across Europe, ‘From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads’.

️ Emma has written How to Save the World with a Chicken and an Egg: perfect for eco-aware young readers.

️ Tracy is picking an outdoors trip from the past to revisit each week in three photos and a song.

Thank you for reading. As Austin Kleon says, “This newsletter is free, but not cheap.” To show your support, would you mind forwarding it to someone who’d like it,  sharing it on Twitter, reading one of my books, subscribing to a free podcast, getting a birthday greeting video from me, or maybe even donating to keep the newsletter going.

(If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here.)

    Cheers,

    Alastair
