| Our health service is in crisis, and our collective fitness is terrible. These issues are deeply interconnected, and we already know that spending time outdoors is good for mind, body and soul. If a scientist could invent a little pill to take once a week that massively helped counter many diseases, improved longevity, and also gave a giant boost to both physical and mental fitness, they’d win every prize on the planet. But what if such a ‘pill’ already existed?
Every Saturday at 9 am, in parks across the globe, something magical happens—Parkrun. It’s an uplifting, accessible, everyone-welcome, non-intimidating, low-hassle, free bit of community spirit, encouragement, sociability, and exercise. On last week’s outing alone, I witnessed athletes in alarmingly skimpy shorts, dads pushing prams, families with kids, very slow walkers, a blind lady, folks with their dogs, and everything in between. A six-year-old, an 82-year-old, and people of every shape, size, and colour all came together with a shared goal: to enjoy and benefit from physical activity.
Parkrun offers more than just physical benefits. It fosters community spirit, providing a sense of belonging and mutual encouragement. It’s a space where nobody is ‘too slow’: the average global time for a Parkrun is going UP as more ‘non runners’ realise that it’s a great thing to be part of. If you don’t want to run, jog, or walk, you can help out as a volunteer and be part of a friendly community activity. This inclusion and support can be transformative for mental health, combating loneliness and depression. By getting involved in Parkrun, you’re not just taking steps to improve your health, but also contributing to a healthier, happier community. Running has been so good for me: physically, mentally, time outdoors, simplicity… I want others to have some of that too, even if you’re not a ‘runner’.
If the NHS could prescribe Parkrun, it would be revolutionary. (Dare I even consider the thought experiment of making it compulsory, as running was when I was at school?!)
The very best of humanity, for free, in a park near you, every Saturday morning. So why not register online for free, turn up next Saturday, and experience the benefits yourself? Let’s make the world a healthier, happier place, one Parkrun at a time. Please send me a photo!
