How am I going to work the Ashes series into this website? I asked myself.
It has to be done somehow, as the cricket will dominate my summer now I’mm no longer anticipating an Antarctic Christmas. Here goes…

Kevin Pietersen was England’s top scorer in the first innings at Cardiff. He is England’s best batsman, and his 69 runs were certainly valuable. Yet, not for the first time, Pietersen self-destructed in a show-ponying attempt to smash the bowler out of the ground. He seems to believe that scoring more highly than his team mates is all he needs to do. This grates with me. I feel far more appreciative of Swann’s 47 run contribution. A far less gifted batsman, certainly, but one seizing his opportunity with both hands and determined to achieve his full potential.

None of us has any control over the natural gifts we are given. How daft to gloat and strut over something you have been given but not earned. I definitely admire people who work hard to make the most of what they have more than the lazy, misplaced arrogance of settling for being better than others, rather than being the best you can be.
