Bikepacking equipment

Here is the equipment I packed recently for a multi-day bikepacking ride over several hundred kilometres of hilly roads, gravel tracks, bridleways and clifftop footpaths.

Top Row, from Left to Right.

  • Pannier. I only needed to use one, and with hindsight on this trip I’d have preferred just to use frame bags. I love the ease of use and flexibility of panniers though.
  • Tarpaulin, plus pegs and string to attach it to trees / fences etc.
  • Thermaret, 3/4 length.
  • Sleeping bag.
  • Inflatable pillow, because I’m old and soft.
  • Bivvy bag.
  • 5l canoeing drybag to carry all the sleeping gear. The drybags fixed to the cages on the front forks. Worked really well.

Top Row, from Left to Right.

  • Helmet and cap.
  • Sony RX100 vii camera in Amazon Basics pouch. Worn on belt, with a lanyard of paracord looped over my head and shoulder. I loved having 200mm optical zoom, though I’d have traded a chunk of that zoom for a 17mm wide angle rather than the 24mm. Camera battery lasted well. Picture quality not noticeably different to my Sony A7S DSLR with heavy lenses. Feels like the perfect camera to take travelling.
  • P20 Suncream – perfect, even for a paleface like me, no mater how much you sweat or how many rivers you jump in. (Other toiletries, not pictured: toothbrush, toothpaste, loo roll.)
  • Headtorch.
  • Gorillapod Joby tripod.
  • Pump
  • Alpkit Kraku tiny stove and lighter.
  • Long spoon.
  • Mug.
  • Opinel knife (only because I couldn’t find my Swiss Army knife).
  • Gas canister.
  • Pan.
  • 5l canoeing drybag to carry all the cooking gear.
  • Not pictured – 2 litre old Coke bottle to carry extra water at night. Coffee bags. Noodles / snacks.

Other gear

  • Bike – Sonder Santiago. I would love to have cycled around the world on this bike. Spokey dokeys on the wheel for retro nostalgic style reasons, obviously. But they are also a handy auditory warning in case anyone tries to sneak off with your bike.
  • Tool pouch containing lock, multitool, tube, tyre levers, patches, red rear light.
  • Frame pouches to carry snacks, sunglasses etc.
  • Mobile phone mounted to handlebar using Viewranger to navigate.
  • Paper map.
  • Notebook and pen.
  • Spare battery pack, cables, plug adapter.
  • Cash and credit card.

Clothes

  • Shorts.
  • Cycling top.
  • Leggings.
  • Base layer.
  • Long sleeved shirt.
  • Raincoat.
  • Buff.
  • Cycling mitts.
