As part of last year’s grand plan to practice what I preach and seek out microadventures as well as massive ones, I came up with the idea to take a journey round the world foods of London, eating (with Tom the Hungry Cyclist and anyone who fancied joining us) in one restaurant from a nation representing each letter of the alphabet. An A to Z of world food.
I’mm delighted to have reached the half way point.
If you find yourself anywhere near London please keep an eye on my Twitter page and come join us. The gatherings tend to be last-minute and spontaneous.
It’s been a great adventure. Good food, excellent company and a rich seasoning of the unexpected. You do not need to travel round the world to have an adventure. You just need to get out of the house, get out of your routine, and do something different…
Here’s a taste of what we’ve had so far:
- Afghanistan: Seven refugee brothers get the journey off to a great start.
- Bolivia: £6 and I didn’t need to eat for 24 hours. Soup included a chicken’s foot.
- Cambodia: Sizzling steak sautéed in butter…
- Denmark: A posh foray for us into South Kensington!
- Eritrea: Frankincense, honey wine and a giant, communal platter.
- France: Reluctantly I had to admit the French know how to cook.
- Georgia: Cheesy bread, giant dumplings and enough wine for me to miss the last train home.
- Hungary: Served in a deserted pub in north London with a giant rottweiler behind the bar.
- Iran: A surprising slice of Persia tucked behind a DIY shop.
- Japan: Delicious, beautiful food – my favourite meal so far.
- Korea: Ox tongue, cook your own steak and a wonderful fish stew.
- Lebanon: Delicious starters and really fun chefs.
- Mexico: Our first sampling of street food and the best Mexican food I have eaten outside Mexico.
- Nigeria: The fish eyeballs were not the worst part of the meal. An adventure…
