Some things I’d like to share with you today:
Congratulations to the winners of the Wainwright prizes for nature writing. It was a huge honour to be one of the judges this year. (Shame I wasn’t a judge last year – Local would definitely have won… )
Big Shakeout is Alpkit’s end of the summer party, a weekend of adventure and entertainment. Try something new, let your kids run wild, or just have great days and nights listening to talks and music. I’ll be speaking on the Saturday.
The end of the road? What The Salt Path scandal means for the nature memoir. (As an author / hiker / reader I declare a vested interest in this juicy saga! As an author, I was wildly envious of the book’s success. As a hiker, I enjoyed the adventure. As a reader, I never really warmed to the book.) Anyway, I’m looking forward to discussing ‘truth in adventure story-telling’ at the Alpkit Big Shakeout weekend!
If I had an ounce of DIY oomph about me, I’d love to give my writing shed a green roof. Maybe you can install one …
I always enjoy Brendan Leonard’s Friday newsletter , although I confess that, for all the thoughtful essays and films he links to, my favourite part is usually the week’s goofy, funny one .
Can I help you?
Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate.
Here’s what you guys have been up to recently:
Max White recently completed a walk from John O Groats to Lands End at the age of 77, making him the oldest person ever to achieve this feat. He did the same route in reverse only one year earlier, on both occasions unaided, sleeping rough all the way, to raise money for Medicines Sans Frontieres.
Alexia writes a weekly newsletter for women (and me!) who’d love a little dose of creativity in their lives. Wild Postcards: studio stories, bold prints, and juicy sparks of creativity. (Scroll to the bottom to sign up.)
Beatrice is setting off to run and ride 1,100km along the Heysen and Mawson Trails in South Australia to raise funds for Conservation Council SA. You can find out more info here.
Sam is making a chronological podcast of the entire history of innovation, from the discovery of Fire all the way to the modern day. The project is going to take ~15 years as he reads about three books per episode. It’s geeky but fun with a bit of a Bill Bryson curious side to it.

In the Company of Camels. Before I even began planning to cycle round the world, I dreamed of crossing the Australian Outback. This incredible journey, with fantastic photography, brought all those dreams rushing back!
‘Other surfers respect me’: the 92-year-old still riding waves in New Zealand.
“‘I’m a Kind of Mechanised Tramp'” A short film about cycle touring in the 1970s. I love the voiceover guy.
I am a big believer in asking myself challenging questions when trying to make plans or figure life out. These, from Tim Ferriss and James Clear are excellent.
Thank you for reading. As Austin Kleon says, “This newsletter is free, but not cheap.” To show your support, would you mind forwarding it to someone who’d like it, sharing it on Twitter, reading one of my books, subscribing to a free podcast, getting a birthday greeting video from me, or maybe even donating to keep the newsletter going – either monthly on Patreon or treating me to a metaphorical cup of coffee.
