    Shouting from the Shed

    Hello again!

I’m Alastair Humphreys, adventurer, book writer, and overexcited sender of four newsletters. Nobody needs that many emails from me!

You’re reading Shouting from the Shed. Please check it’s the one that suits you best – or switch to a better fit:

    1. Shouting from the Shed – my news and interesting bits & bobs I find. Get it here, every couple of weeks.
    2. Adventure + Purpose – how can those of us who love the wild world do our bit to fix it? Subscribe here for a Saturday read.
    3. The Doorstep Mile – helping you live a little bit more adventurously in everyday life. Get it every Monday, here.
    4. Ask An Adventurer – how I build a career as a solo creative. Tips every couple of weeks.
🏏 Summer has arrived! How do I know? Because there’s a cold wind blowing and I’m wearing a coat in my shed. And also because Test Match Special has returned and I’m listening to cricket while I write this. Lovely. (England currently 36-0…)

⛺️ There was fantastic news yesterday that wild camping will still be allowed on Dartmoor, after the supreme court ruled that a multimillionaire landowner was wrong to ban it on his land.

🌳 The countryside was also in the news with the conviction of the two clowns who chopped down the iconic Sycamore Gap tree for a laugh. My thoughts on this has been my most popular post of the year, by a mile.

❤️ I enjoy being able to share news of what you guys have been up to recently. There’s a bumper crop of these today – please do have a look and try to support the good stuff that you are all doing.

🙏 Thank you so much to all of you who help support these newsletters via Patreon (either monthly or annually) and keep the metaphorical lights on and the newsletters going out to 15,000 readers.

😘 If you enjoy this newsletter, please forward it to five friends. I’d love to find 5,000 new readers this year. If you don’t enjoy it, please click ‘reply’ and let me know how it could be better!

🪴 Thanks to everyone who sent me pictures of their own ‘micro-rewilding’ gardens!

Here’s what I’d like to share with you today:

    • 🥫 PROJECT: My absolute favourite project at the moment is picking up trash and then turning cans into pinhole cameras (see the pic at the top of this email). So simple, so fascinating. Clean up trash / take beautiful photos! Win, win! I have LOVED doing this: Give it a try!
    • ⛰ EXPEDITION: Climbers Summit Everest in Five Days from Home. Well done, but also – ‘ugh’.
    • 🎤 EVENT: Join me for a free Climate Storytelling Webinar on June 17th.
    • ⛷ FILM: “Of a Lifetime” – a celebration of discovery, adventure, and the passing of the torch to the next generation against the breathtaking backdrop of Antarctica.
    • 🚲 ARTICLE: An E-Bike Transformed My Family’s Life: Getting around on one might be a bit slower than in a car, but it’s also so much richer.
    • 😀 David Hampton planted larch trees in the Douglas fir forest in Oregon to create a smiley face. it returns each fall and makes a happy showing.
    • 🙋‍♂️ Ask me anything… I dare you.
    Can I help you?

Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate.

Here’s what you guys have been up to recently:

    • Andy has a new exhibition — ‘Skateboarding the Scottish Islands with a Sketchbook’.
    • Rebecca is running a ten-week course that blends climate, nature and life writing, offering tools to meet the challenges we face and drawing upon the immense power of writing to forge a path ahead with greater courage and clarity.
    • Joe has completed the Isle of Wight coastline on kick powered scooters for the stroke association.
    • Chris has created an interactive ‘Local 7 Summits’ tool to help you plan your own adventure.
    • Lizzy runs bushcraft courses close to London.
    • Tom has produced The North – a film about two old friends walking 600 kilometers through the Scottish highlands, to reconnect with each other, with nature and with parts of themselves they have lost.
    • Marshall writes a weekly newsletter about wellness, biking, and community, and we’d be hyped if you shared it with folks in a future shouting from the shed!
    • Nicole runs Tiny Gatherings including Unplug & Reconnect : A Family Accessible Escape (wheelchair-friendly) that is a chance to slow down, share meals, and enjoy outdoor fun together.
    • Jody has created an online course about wildlife-friendly gardening in the UK.
    • Sam has built a platform to help climbers / prospective mountaineers find guides worldwide.
    • Catherine leads The Matriarch Adventure – an incredible expedition opportunity for women.
    • Ben is a biking~hiking-SUPing~beach cleaning fundraiser for clean seas.
    • Rob publishes a newsletter with instructions for creating entertaining paper automata designs.
    • Corrie has published a new book on her Fine Art Photography.
    • Humphrey is on a 1,700-mile bike ride round Scotland, raising funds for the Samaritans.
    • Michael will run three ultra-marathons in three days, along Hadrian’s Wall, to raise £1,000 for Rewilding Britain.

    Shouting From The Shed 44

Straight in to what’s caught my eye recently…

    • Lazy: a manifesto. Important reading for anyone who feels too busy.
    • I wish my travel diaries looked like these.
    • The obituary of Hilary Lister, a record-breaking sailor who became the first quadriplegic person to sail alone across the English Channel.
    • Danny MacAskill’s back, and now he has joined the gym. Fun video of his mesmerising bike skills.
    • Two Instagram accounts I’m enjoying: @boredofborders and @bikewander.
    • Ask me anything… I dare you.
    • My podcast has had 50,000 listens in the first 5 weeks. If you’re a podcast listener, please do give it a try here.
If you know nothing about podcasts, let’s forget I even mentioned the word…
    • Instead, can I tempt you to listen to an interview I did with the world’s youngest Michelin Star chef, the Chief Executive of the charity Friends of the Peak District, the boss of a publishing company or our need to Reclaim Time to Think if we are to Do Meaningful Things…?

    Cheers!

Thank you for reading. As Austin Kleon says, “This newsletter is free, but not cheap.” To show your support, would you mind forwarding it to someone who’d like it,  sharing it on Twitter, reading one of my books, subscribing to a free podcast, getting a birthday greeting video from me, or maybe even donating to keep the newsletter going – either monthly on Patreon or treating me to a metaphorical cup of coffee.

(If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here.)

    Cheers,

    Alastair
