    Shouting from the Shed
    Hi again,

    I’m Alastair – fan of travel, books, nature, and amusing videos of people trying to jump into frozen swimming pools. Hopefully you’re here because you’ve enjoyed my adventures, books, or newsletter goodies.

    Well, spring has come, my mood soaring with the sun, and I’ve bought myself a new (old) Olympus film camera to play with (above).

    I’ve been getting out and about, recreating some old adventure photos in rather less epic, but pleasantly sunny spots.

    It’s all part of my slowly-evolving mission to start helping more people in more places to spend more time outdoors, more often.

    Before we begin today, I have a quick question for you:

    Would you pay £1 a month for this newsletter?
    I enjoy writing this, and I hope it’s helpful. I’m wondering if the money I could earn from it is worth the inevitable loss of lots of loyal readers.
    Yes. And I’m not just being polite. I actually would pay.

    No. I like it, but I wouldn’t bother to pay. Sorry!

    Vote
    Right, onto all the things I’d like to share with you today:

    • 🎤 I have a couple of speaking slots available if you’d like me to visit your school or business:
      * Manchester: May 20
      * Liverpool: June 4
    • 🚶‍♂️ Is there such a thing as ‘responsible trespassing’? This man walked 500 miles—and says yes.
    • ⛵️ SailLink – fancy sailing across the Channel rather than taking the ferry?
    • 🐤 I adored everything about this short film: “a lousy salary, and a fantastic life,”
    • 👦 How to build confidence in kids through outdoor adventure. An interesting TEDx talk.
    • 💰 A fund to help people have Purposeful Adventures. You can apply for a grant or donate to the pot.
    • 📚 Thanks to everyone who has helped my book Microadventures rack up 1000 reviews. Luckily most people liked it more than Mr Tolson: “you can, should have and hopefully will do much better in the future”. 😂
    • 🏃‍♀️ 2500km, 33 Days, One Mission! Champion the 1.5 million UK children with disabilities by running, cycling, or wheeling for inclusive sport and play. Relay Your Way!
    • ✍️ The Tom Grass Spirit of Adventure Literary Prize is a writing prize for creative storytelling with a focus on the spirit of adventure.
    • 🦖 Don’t Choose Extinction – an excellent, brief summary of the insanity of humans funding fossil fuels subsidies.
    • 🌳 Hundreds of thousands of free trees to give away to schools and communities. I find planting a tree SO satisfying!
    • ❄️ The last ice merchant: harvesting Ecuador’s glaciers.
    Adventure + Purpose:

    My big effort this year is my A+P newsletter. But I’m well aware you don’t all need more emails from me! So here’s just one recent post:

    • Find Your Big Five: You can’t fix everything, but you can change something—find what you really care about, and start today.
    Can I help you?

    Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate.

    Here’s what you guys have been up to recently:

    • 🏃‍♀️ Amy is running the London Marathon for The Outward Bound Trust.
    • ✍️ Rob Twigger is part of a creative writing course in fabulous Wigtown this April. Such a great place and event.
    • ⛰ Richard (mentioned in an earlier edition) is making great progress on his Appalachian Trail thru-hike in support of Global Angels. [I find ‘Appalachian’ as impossibly hard to spell as ‘broccoli’ and ‘knowledge’.]
    Thank you for reading. As Austin Kleon says, “This newsletter is free, but not cheap.” To show your support, would you mind forwarding it to someone who’d like it,  sharing it on Twitter, reading one of my books, subscribing to a free podcast, getting a birthday greeting video from me, or maybe even donating to keep the newsletter going – either monthly on Patreon or treating me to a metaphorical cup of coffee.

    (If you’re seeing this newsletter for the first time, you can subscribe here.)

    Cheers,

    Alastair
