In recent years, my focus has gone from huge adventures to smaller microadventures and local exploration.
Today though I’m being interviewed on a podcast about Grand Adventures – my project from 2016 encouraging people to save up £20 a week for a year, and then go and have a massive adventure. Looking back through old blog posts, I have to modestly say that it is brilliant! I did so much work for this book, talked to so many cool people! If you’re dreaming of a big journey, I think you’ll really benefit from it.
So I’ve gathered together some of the more useful blog posts from that era to give them an airing for you. Well done, young me!
Grand Adventures: How to Dream Big, Plan Smart, and Live Boldly
Life can feel monotonous at times—work, chores, commitments. Many of us dream of breaking free, embarking on a grand adventure that takes us beyond the confines of daily life. Yet, despite the allure, most of us never take that first step. Why? What holds us back? And more importantly, how can we overcome those obstacles to make adventure a part of our lives?
In Grand Adventures, I explore the barriers that stop us, offer practical ways to overcome them, and share inspiring stories of people who’ve made their dreams a reality. Here’s a snapshot of what’s possible—and why you should start planning your own adventure today.
What Problems Stop Us From Having Adventures?
For many of us, the biggest barriers to adventure aren’t physical or financial—they’re mental. Here are the most common hurdles:
- Time Constraints
Life is busy. With work, family, and social obligations, it’s easy to think, “I just don’t have the time.” For those in traditional 9-to-5 jobs, the idea of taking weeks or months off for an adventure can feel impossible. - Financial Worries
Adventures are often seen as expensive undertakings requiring flights, gear, and endless planning. The cost can feel prohibitive, especially when weighed against other life expenses. - Fear of Failure or the Unknown
Fear of discomfort, failure, or stepping into unfamiliar territory can paralyze us. What if the trip goes wrong? What if you’re not as prepared as you think? These “what ifs” often stop people before they even start. - Commitments and Responsibilities
Balancing family, work, and other obligations can make adventure feel like an indulgence rather than a worthwhile pursuit. Guilt over leaving loved ones or stepping away from responsibilities can be a significant deterrent. - Lack of Ideas or Inspiration
Sometimes, people want to have an adventure but don’t know where to start. They lack a clear idea of what kind of journey would suit them or how to make it happen.
How Can We Overcome These Barriers?
While the obstacles to adventure may feel overwhelming, they are far from insurmountable. Here’s how to tackle them:
- Reframe Time as Opportunity
Adventures don’t have to be long to be meaningful. Microadventures—a night under the stars, a weekend hike, or a cycle ride to a nearby destination—can be squeezed into even the busiest schedule. Start small and build from there. - Adventure on a Budget
Incredible adventures don’t have to cost a fortune. In Grand Adventures, I feature stories of people who undertook life-changing journeys for less than £1,000. By starting close to home, using public transport, or borrowing gear, you can keep costs low while still having an amazing experience. - Break Down the Fear
The unknown is intimidating, but it’s also exciting. Take inspiration from adventurers like Sarah Outen, who rowed across oceans, or Laura Bingham, who cycled South America without a detailed plan. Start by addressing the basics: safety, preparation, and taking the first step. The rest will follow. - Involve Loved Ones or Adjust the Scale
Commitments don’t have to hold you back—they can be part of the journey. Plan family-friendly adventures or adjust your trips to fit into your current lifestyle. Phoebe Smith’s weekend wild camping trips are a great example of integrating adventure into everyday life. - Find Your Spark
Inspiration is everywhere: maps, books, blogs, and other people’s stories. Think about your passions—what excites you? Whether it’s cycling, hiking, or exploring new cultures, align your adventure with what truly motivates you.
Why Should We Overcome These Barriers?
Adventure changes you. It challenges you, teaches you resilience, and offers a new perspective on the world. Here’s why you should make it a priority:
- Reconnection with Nature and Simplicity
In a world dominated by screens and deadlines, adventure pulls us back into the real world. Whether it’s sleeping under the stars or walking through untamed landscapes, it reconnects us with the simplicity of life. - Personal Growth
Adventures push you out of your comfort zone, fostering resilience, creativity, and problem-solving skills. They build confidence and help you discover what you’re truly capable of. - Creating Stories and Memories
Adventures make life richer. They give you stories to tell, memories to cherish, and experiences that shape your identity. A grand adventure becomes part of who you are. - Inspiration to Others
By stepping into the unknown, you inspire others to do the same. Your journey might encourage someone else to embark on their own adventure.

Take inspiration from Sarah Outen and plan a rowing trip down a local river or canal. Borrow or rent equipment to keep costs low. - Walk a Historic Trail
Many historic walking routes, such as the Camino de Santiago, offer affordable accommodation and a chance to experience a mix of history, culture, and adventure. - Wild Camping in the UK
