    Shouting from the Shed
    Hi again,

Here are some things I’d like to share with you today:

    • The art of exploring: “After centuries of meaningless discoveries and empty triumphs, today’s would-be explorers should learn to look beyond ‘the shadow of self’”.
    • The Subversive Joy of Cold-Water Swimming.
    • There She Goes: A Reading List on Women Adventurers.
    • Ten Metre Tower is such a fascinating little film: We sought to capture people facing a difficult situation, to make a portrait of humans in doubt.
    • The Frog Whitton Round is a classic cycling and swimming challenge set in the English Lake District.
    • The Man Who Skied Down Everest (Oscar-Winning Documentary) in 1970.
    • Peaceful cycling at London’s margins – a handy resource if you’re looking for places to ride.
    • 7 reasons why there’s more good news on climate change than you think.
One of my films I’d like to share with you today:

The Seven Summits of my Neighbourhood

Can I help you? Let me know if you have a relevant project that my readers would appreciate.

Here are five things I’d like to share with you today…

    • Fun: Dogs of the World (and their countries of origin).
    • Film: “Sometimes we hear a call from nature. When I was 18 years old I ventured out alone with only a backpack full of simple hand tools to actualise my dream. Build my own traditional off grid log cabin by hand from the materials of the Swedish wilderness. Just like our Forefathers did.”
    • Article: Why face real threats when simulated ones will do just fine?
    • Activism: Our last free-flowing rivers and wild places are increasingly under threat. Save Our Rivers aims to provide those who care with the information and knowledge on how to use existing legal structures to fight back.
    • Book: My friend Brendan (aka ‘Semi Rad’) has put together a list of his books of the year.
ALSO: The Rebel Book Club has some fabulous non-fiction book recommendations.

    • Walking, by Erling Kagge is an illuminating examination of the joy of walking. It’s about the love of exploration, the delight of discovery and the equilibrium that can be found walking.
    • A short film that makes me want to leave the world behind and go and be a fire lookout on a hilltop in America for the summer.
    • A nice idea for a microadventure – the longest distance you can walk in the UK without crossing a road.
    • The photographs in “The Pillar” encounter birds on their own terms. Fine short essay and photography piece in the New Yorker.
    • How to save our planet. The best 8-minute summary I’ve seen.

    Thank you for reading.

A microadventure is an adventure that is short, simple, local, cheap – yet still fun, exciting, challenging, refreshing and rewarding.

    • Arctic Photography

I spent six weeks in the Canadian Arctic on an Ice Base on the frozen Arctic Ocean at 78 degrees north (at the spot often referred to in polar races as ‘The North Pole’, though in fact it was the 1996 location of the magnetic North Pole).
