My new book (There Are Other Rivers) is nearing completion. It will be ready for Christmas…
It’s a little different to normal travel books and I’mm planning to publish, print and distribute it in a variety of ways. I’mve decided to go back to self-publishing for this book for loads of reasons which I’mll explain shortly. I’mm excited about it all.
I don’t like the months of computer-tapping. Then I don’t like the sleep deprivation, deadline chasing phase (right now).
But once all that is done I love writing books. And I particularly enjoy sorting out the book’s cover.
It’s a difficult, delicious dilemma.
I thought I’md share a selection with you. And ask for your help in picking the best.
Despite this book being about my walk across southern India it is not a book about India nor is it a rip-roaring adventure.
It’s a book that tries to explain why I enjoy long journeys, and a book that tries to convey what one normal day is like on a long journey.
Given that, which cover (from those shown below, or the grid here) do you like the most? Just click on the picture and you will have voted for it. You can click on as many as you like…

I love the last one.
Me too…
I like the lady in pink crossing the river
No way. IT’S SHOUTING TOO MUCH.
I like the first one.
Peter – I think you replied to the wrong Sally!
The problem with this is that it makes it look like it is a book about India or a river which it isn’t really!
but it’s the best photo..
The red one with capital bold letters is impressive.
Will the book also appear on the iBookstore for the iPad? I’m guilty of buying more and more books this way.
Definitely!
I just need to learn how to do that…
Love the last cover Al but I agree with Oli about the sub text. Could it be :
A Day on the Indian Road
One Day on the Road Across India
One Day on Foot Across In India
One Day from an Indian Journey
etc…………..
(Still waiting in Punta !)
I like the fourth from last. Good balance of water, people, title. Feelings of slowing down, looking out, as well as inward. Small steps along a long journey. The subtle reflecting colours reflect a moment in time and not the country your travelling through.
From aesthetics, I like the last one. The only problem is that it looks like what a foreigner might show as being India.
Number 19 for me!
I’ll def. buy the book once I’ve finished my epic backlog of other books.
Does yours have lots of pictures? I can just about cope with kid’s picture and story books, but if yours doesn’t have a pop-out center page, squidgy buttons that make noises and vomit/drool proof paper, I might struggle ;-)
I like the 2nd one with the young man in the river – assuming that’s you :) it makes it more personal. But they are all pretty good :)
Penultimate one for me. Combination of ‘buy me’ red and ‘interesting story’ photo.
I vote for the second one. Its an intimate and engaging travellers version of a moment common to everyone’s mundane daily routine. And a cracking photo with a classic font to boot.
Depending upon how much the book is about India, you may want to avoid pictures that lead the reader into thinking that the book’s about India. The water images work best, I think. Is that you in the boat? In India?
In the first 5 covers, is there a reason why the “are” is not capitalized? Pardon me, I’m an editor. ;)
I pick the 4th from the bottom. I like the way the works fit in the shades and lines in the water.
woops, I meant ‘words’, not ‘works’. Editor needs more coffee.
I like the last three.
